Hi All,

Ok, so i’ve been officially rubbish prior to and after completing my MA, sorry about that! I’m just about to update the design and photography pages with my MA project work and the design work i’ve been doing since leaving university. I called this project ‘Life on a postcard’ because I took quotes from my subjects that were very honest statements about themselves / their lives, photographed and illustrated these quotes. I chose to use the postcard medium to enforce the messages because it is a classic form of communication. The quotes were hand written by the models to enforce the personal nature of the project.

Over the past few weeks I have been working with a talented Fashion Illustration student called Angela Keeler (www.angelfishillustration.co.uk) to produce a piece of Illustration for a local Hair Salon. This is the finished image which will be printed A1 size and displayed in Ginger Lily Hair Salon, Kenilworth.

China Design Now – Site Visit

Well I finally made it to the China Design Now exhibition at the V&A and I have to say it was definitely worth a visit! The exhibition explores China’s hopes and dreams over the last two decades, from individual artists/designers to the nation as a whole. The exhibition hopes to bring contemporary China closer to you.

INTRODUCTION (FROM THE EXHIBITION PUBLICATION)

China is huge. China is topical. Yet China remains a mystery to most people in the west. ‘Made in China’ has become a familiar tag, but the spectacular creative energy in modern China is barely known. During the last twenty years, the Chinese have rediscovered their pre-socialist past and begun the combine their own traditions with global influences to produce a cultural rebirth. At the heart of this lies a new culture of design.

The exhibition will take you on a journey along China’s coastal cites to experience the country’s creative landscape. The journey starts in the far south, where graphic designers in shenzhen began to explore new directions in the early 1990s. Next we move up to Shanghai. Here consumerism and urban culture have combined to produce astonishing fashion and lifestyles. Finally, we travel to Beijing, where monumental architecture for the Olympic Games is transforming the skyline of this ancient capital.

Over the past few weeks I have discovered the absolutely amazing potential of Photoshop, Photoshop brushes (http://www.brushes.obsidiandawn.com/index.htm) and Wacom Graphics tablets. Previously an Illustrator snob, I admit I’d never attempted producing Illustration work in Photoshop but from now on I can imagine using it more often than not. Enjoy

I am currently working on a series of illustrations based on things friends have said to me that I feel say a lot about them. This illustration is based on the above quote and will be one of several, which will eventually have the text handwritten on top of the image and later printed on postcards as self promotional material.
